All singers are invited to join The Princeton Society of Musical Amateurs (PSMA) in a reading of Gilbert & Sullivan’s “Pirates of Penzance” on Sunday, Jan. 17. No acting ability or auditions are required, and vocal scores will be provided.
“Pirates of Penzance,” a comic opera, is a satiric send-up of Victorian Era British manners, and hypocritical military pomposity. The lyrics are witty, and the tunes are splendid and singable.
Lee Milhous will conduct soloists, orchestra, and a pick-up chorus of gentle pirates (tenors and basses), and nubile daughters of Major General Stanley (sopranos and altos).
The reading will be at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Princeton, 50 Cherry Hill Road, Princeton, just off Route 206. The session will begin at 3 p.m. with a few pointers for chorus and orchestra.
Then, about 4 p.m., all will “take it from the top,” winding up at about 7 p.m. There will be one social intermission, with refreshments.
Admission (at the door) is $10 for singers, but there is no charge for students, or for non-singing guests. Individuals and couples are also encouraged to join PSMA for the year.
