The Hightstown High School FIRST Robotics Team will be hosting Snow Day Showdown 9, an annual FIRST Tech Challenge qualifier competition, on Sunday, Jan. 31 in the gymnasium of Hightstown High School.
Participants from 36 schools will be competing in two-on-two matches to try to qualify for the New Jersey State Championship. Matches start around 11 a.m. and will end at approximately 4 p.m. Concessions will be available.
The FIRST program works to enrich today’s youth with STEM knowledge, by pairing them with local industry mentors to design and build competitive robots. Gaining not only technical knowledge and problem solving skills, students involved in the program leave with leadership and networking skills, as well as the ability to work as part of a team under pressure. The abilities and expertise gained by students in the FIRST program can lead to scholarships, college advantages, and job opportunities.
In addition to the competition, Team Mercury has also invited several colleges to attend its second annual college fair. Roughly 10 colleges plan on attending, ranging from state, local, and private schools from the area.
