HILLSBOROUGH: Township should adopt mayor-council government

To the editor:
I am writing to express my opinion on the current system that Hillsborough Township uses, in terms of local government.
Hillsborough is governed under a five-member Township Committee elected directly by the voters at-large in partisan elections to serve three-year terms of office on a staggered basis. Either one or two seats come up for election each November general election.
My complaint has to due solely with the mayor selection in Hillsborough.
The mayor and deputy mayor are chosen by the Township Committee from among its members at an annual reorganization meeting. Each serve a one-year term. So essentially, the members of the committee select a mayor amongst themselves. Due to Hillsborough retaining the committee members most years, the members rotate the mayor depending on the year.
The residents of Hillsborough deserve the right to elect a mayor. While many believe the mayor is just a figurehead, the mayor plays an important role in a town or city’s development. I am suggesting that Hillsborough adopt a mayor-council form of government.
This issue has been discussed in the past. Hillsborough in November 2007 voted on the issues as a part of the general election.
Our government is intended to be for the people, and by the people, so the residents of Hillsborough should be allowed to vote on their mayor. The mayor is usually the council spokesperson and has a significant ceremonial role at particular events, including citizenship ceremonies. The mayor is also an important community leader and is often the spokesperson for the community.
The members of this town should be allowed to elect their representative directly. Hillsborough should allow their residents to vote on this topic in the next general election.
