PLAINSBORO — The Plainsboro Township Police Department does not arrest anyone who owes money to the Internal Revenue Service — that’s the message from Chief of Police Guy Armour.
Chief Armour said a resident contacted Plainsboro Township officials to report that someone called and represented himself as an Internal Revenue Service agent. The phony agent said the resident owed money to the Internal Revenue Service.
“The resident was threatened with arrest by the Plainsboro Township police if they did not send money immediately. The telephone number on the caller ID was (609) 799-0909, which is the township’s main number,” Chief Armour said.
“We believe this is a masking number and does not originate from the township. Do not be scammed by these fraudulent agents. You will never receive a phone call from Plainsboro Township regarding Internal Revenue Service matters,” the police chief said.
The Internal Revenue Service contacts taxpayers through certified mail in the event that it needs to speak to the taxpayer, he said. Agents do not make telephone calls to taxpayers.
Chief Armour advised residents to disregard the phone calls and instead to forward the information to the Police Department through its on-line reporting system.
“If you need further information, please contact the Police Department at (609) 799-2333,” Chief Armour said.
