The American Heart Association is uniting with companies, community organizations, families and friends to “Go Red” and “Glow Red” on Feb. 5 to spread the message that heart disease and stroke cause 1 in 3 deaths among women each year—more than all cancers combined.

Thousands of New Jerseyans will participate in National Wear Red Day by donating $5 to the Go Red For Women campaign. In turn, they will receive a red dress pin or wristband and lifesaving heart health education.

Some organizations will offer heart healthy lunch and learn programs, organize healthy walks or offer healthier foods in vending machines or cafeterias. Additionally, landmarks and buildings around the state will illuminate in red to help raise awareness to women’s heart health the evening of National Wear Red Day.

“This is such an easy way to come together to raise awareness and celebrate heart health. By Going Red and Glowing Red, we remind women, and all of us, how important our hearts are. February is the perfect time to learn more about your heart health and make a change to prevent heart disease and stroke,” said Dr. Carol Gill, president of the American Heart Association Northern New Jersey board of directors and a physician at the VA New Jersey Health Care System in East Orange.

Statistics show 90 percent of women have one or more risk factors for heart disease or stroke, and these diseases kill approximately one woman every 80 seconds. According to a new scientific statement published in the American Heart Association’s journal “Circulation,” a woman’s heart attack may have different underlying causes, symptoms and outcomes compared to men, and differences in risk factors and outcomes are further pronounced in black and Hispanic women.

However, 80 percent of cardiac and stroke events may be prevented with education and action. The American Heart Association and American Stroke Association encourages everyone to schedule a Well-Woman Visit today.

According to the American Heart Association, in the United States, about 285 fewer women die from heart disease and stroke each day and cardiovascular disease death in women has decreased by more than 30 percent over the past 10 years.

The event is sponsored nationally by Macy’s. For more information on National Wear Red Day or to register a company or organization to participate, call 609-208-0020 or visit www.GoRedForWomen.org/WearRedDay.
