Experience the power of African American musical forms with the voices and music of “Follow the Drinking Gourd” at 2 p.m. on Feb. 7 in the Ellen Gambatese Room at the South Brunswick Public Library, 110 Kingston Lane, Monmouth Junction.

Pianist Diane Goldsmith and singers Ivan Woods and Shannon Hunt will perform spirituals in all kinds of inventive arrangements, from jazz and tango settings to adaptation as anthems of the civil rights marches of the 1960s. The group will show how the blues inspired composers like Harold Arlen and George Gershwin.
