EDISON — Winter Storm Jonas, which dropped upwards of 20-plus inches of snow and brought heavy winds to the area last week, claimed the life of a beloved 27-year-old horse named Tank.

Fire Chief Brian Latham said staff at the Petti Farm, off Petti Lane, requested assistance from members of the department around noon after Tank fell in the deep snow on Jan. 26.

“Despite persistent efforts to help Tank off the ground, farm staff, firefighters, and a veterinarian were unable to stand the animal up due to his weight and the remote location of his pen,” he said.

Some 27 inches of snow fall was recorded in the township.

The farm’s private veterinarian determined the horse should be euthanized although no bones were broken, but because Tank had suffered severe loss of blood circulation lying on the ground for a prolonged period of time, Latham explained.

The Petti Farm is adjacent to Woodland Avenue Park and the Stevens Memorial Wildlife Preserve.
