Solar panel blamed for fire on roof of Macy’s at Brunswick Square Mall

EAST BRUNSWICK – Emergency service personnel responded to Macy’s at the Brunswick Square Mall on Feb. 11 for a report of a fire on the roof.

The East Brunswick Fire Department Districts 1, 2 and 3; the East Brunswick Police Department; and Robert Wood Johnson EMS personnel responded around 10:12 a.m. to an original report of smoke and flames coming from the roof of the mall.

Upon arrival, the fire was contained to a solar panel on the roof of Macy’s, according to a statement released by the East Brunswick Police Department.

Firefighters extinguished the fire without any further extension. The fire was determined under control at approximately 11:15 a.m., police said. Damage was contained to the roof area and the floors below the fire.

The mall was evacuated during the initial response. After it was determined that the fire was contained to Macy’s and there was no danger to any customers or other stores, the mall was reopened, except for the Macy’s wing, according to officials.
