MARLBORO – The Marlboro K-8 School District Board of Education has announced that 11 middle school students from Marlboro will be participating in the All-Shore Intermediate Band ensemble.
At a recent meeting, seven students from Marlboro Middle School and four students from Marlboro Memorial Middle School were commended for being selected to take part in the ensemble.
The All-Shore Intermediate Band is comprised of students from Monmouth and Ocean counties. The young musicians will perform a concert for family members and friends in February.
The seventh grade pupils selected from Marlboro Middle School were Larry Dalton (euphonium), Hannah Lee (flute) and Annie Zhou (clarinet). The eighth grade pupils selected from Marlboro Middle School were Harry Allex (tenor saxophone), Theodore Nguyen (tenor saxophone), Thomas Li (flute) and Gloria Liu (flute).
The sixth grade pupils selected from Marlboro Memorial Middle School were Eric Wang (trumpet) and Allan Zhang (clarinet). The seventh grade pupils selected from Marlboro Memorial Middle School were Ashley Wang (flute) and Alexander Wu (alto saxophone).
In other business, the board offered its thanks for donations that were made to the school district.
The first donation recognized by the board was from SCOPE (Special Children’s Organization for Parents and Educators), which donated $3,000 for the purchase of special education supplies, which will be at the discretion of special education teachers.
“This is an annual thing and it is still greatly appreciated,” Business Administrator Cindy Barr-Rague said. “It is a wonderful thing, it is extra money to help bond special education classes.”
Donations were made to the Asher Holmes Elementary School and the Robertsville Elementary School for a leveled reading program.
Asher Holmes received $8,000 from the school’s Student Activity Fund and Robertsville received $14,932 from the school’s PTO.
According to Barr-Rague, both schools will be buying materials from Capstone, which provides teachers notes for many fiction and non-fiction titles in order to support implementations and guided reading groups from grades one through five.
“This is something our school does not have and I thought it was important to support our teachers in literacy and to support our students’ learning in literacy,” Asher Holmes Principal JoAnn Cilmi said.
Finally, the board commended the efforts of bus driver Nick Russo and the district’s courier, Robert Halmi, for their efforts to protect pupils during a bus breakdown en route to the Robertsville Elementary School in a high traffic area on Dec. 2.
“We want to thank Mr. Halmi and Mr. Russo for taking the necessary precautions and making a bad situation safe,” the board said.
