New Jersey veterans hoping to take to the waters and relax will have more free opportunities to do so, thanks in part to two donations.
The New Jersey chapter of Heroes on the Water has received $2,500 grants from the Investors Bank Foundation and the Roma Bank Community Foundation. The non-profit helps veterans from all branches of the military unwind using the therapeutic qualities of fishing.
“It’s a big help. When you’re with Heroes on the Water, you’re focused on what you’re doing — fishing. You forget everything and they take care of you,” said Charles Silvani, a Vietnam veteran and Hopewell resident. “Each veteran has a person with them all day and it’s unbelievable how they treat you. I went three times last year.”
The New Jersey chapter of Heroes on the Water was formed in 2012. The organization holds large- and small-scale events about every two weekends except during winter, and serves about 200 veterans per year. Heroes on the Water will use the funds from Investors to replace an enclosed trailer.
Veterans have participated in guided kayak fishing trips as therapy to decompress from stresses associated with combat and the physical rigors of rehabilitation.
Veterans receive basic instruction, all the supplies necessary, snacks, and a volunteer who is assigned to be their buddy for the day.
Heroes on the Water applied for the grants from the Short Hills-based foundations, which support non-profit organizations in communities served by Investors Bank. Roma Bank became part of Investors Bank in December 2013.
