Two men charged with illegal disposal of Edison man’s corpse

EDISON – Two men have been charged with illegally disposing a corpse of an Edison man whose body was found in a wooded area in Piscataway last week.

Scott Maynor, 33, and Edward Guy, 35, both of Bound Brook, were charged on Feb. 16, after the remains of Nicholas Phelan, 27, of Edison, were found on Feb. 14 at 5 p.m. by a passerby on River Road, according to a statement released by Middlesex County Prosecutor Andrew C. Carey and Captain Scott Cartmell of the Piscataway Police Department on Feb. 18.

The charges were filed during an investigation by Detective Wayne Canastra of the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office; Detective Robert Rose and Detective Joseph Reilly of the Piscataway Police Department; and the Bound Brook Police Department.

The investigation determined that the defendants and the victim were in Bound Brook when the victim died, according to the statement. Following the death, the defendants moved the victim to the wooded section where he later was discovered by the passerby, officials said.

The cause of death has yet to be determined and is awaiting the results of toxicological testing.

Bail has been set at $75,000 for each of the defendants.
