The local YMCA and YWCA, two organizations with long histories in Princeton, announced on Wednesday a “reorganization” of the buildings they share on Paul Robeson Place as a better way to meet their different missions.
Leaders from both organizations outlined a plan that had been in discussion for two years. The YMCA will be the exclusive occupant of the athletic building that is home to the indoor pool, while the YWCA will be the only occupant of the program building next door.
“The reorganization will clearly divide the YMCA and YWCA buildings, which will reduce some of the confusion that many of us have experienced,” said Kate Bech, CEO of the Princeton Family YMCA, in a joint news release announcing the changes.
The changes include the YMCA giving up its child daycare program, a move that means about 20 of its 35 full-time employees moving over to the YWCA.
“By September 2016, the YWCA will oversee all preschool childcare programs on the campus in the Program Building, and the YMCA will manage the aquatics, sports and summer day camp programs in the Athletic Building and adjacent field,” said YWCA CEO Judy Hutton in the same release.
The YMCA has 3,454 members, and about 120 part-time and seasonal employees in addition to its full-time staff.
