The Northern Monmouth County Branch of AAUW (American Association of University Women) invites the community to The Click Chicks, a celebration of women and photography, at the Eatontown Community Center, 58 Broad Street, Eatontown.
The program will feature two local photographers, Barbara Withers and Marilyn Baldi, and a pioneering woman photographer, Alice Austen, whose story will be told by Carol Walther, a member of AAUW and formerly a photography curator. The evening begins at 7 p.m. with networking and coffee, and the program begins at 7:30 p.m. on March 7.
Austen was born in 1866 and focused her lens on the well-to-do on their own turf. Come see her often humorous, sometimes outrageous, but always beautifully composed images. Walther will share photos from her private collection of Austen’s works. Austen took her last photo in 1951.
Withers, who grew up in the Pacific Northwest, had a career in publishing in New York City and now lives in Red Bank. She began taking photos when she was a girl and her father gave her a Kodak Brownie camera. Most recently she fulfilled a lifelong dream with a trip to Antarctica and she returned with memory cards full of photographs. She will share some highlights of her lifelong interest in art and photography.
Baldi came to photography more recently beginning in 2009. She says, ” I have learned to appreciate nature’s infinite variety and beauty. With my images, I wish to capture the choreography of light, color, texture and form displayed to the music and rhythms of time and the seasons…” The recipient of several awards for her photography, she will be returning from a trip to Malaysia with new images to share.
