SOUTH AMBOY – Two classrooms at the South Amboy Elementary School have been isolated due to a suspicious odor.

Around 11:30 a.m. on March 2, South Amboy police and emergency services were dispatched to the school on Hoffman Plaza for an unknown odor. The Middlesex County Office of Emergency Management, HAZMAT and the county Health Department were dispatched to the school.

Twenty-three students who may have been exposed to the odor were transported to Raritan Bay Medical Center in Perth Amboy to err on the side of caution, police said.

Two affected classrooms were isolated and will be monitored by HAZMAT for an extended period of time, police said.

The school is scheduled to remain open going forward unless tests determine otherwise, police said.
