Former Colts Neck High School football great Anthony Gargiulo was awarded the United States Naval Academy’s Collins/Roos Class of 1949 Junior Varsity Most Valuable Player Award, presented annually to the MVP of the Navy’s JV team and voted on by the players. He was the leading rusher on the team.
Gargiulo, a 2014 graduate of Colts Neck, attended the Naval Academy Prep School during the 2014-15 academic year. He is expected to compete for playing time on the Naval varsity team this fall.
Navy was 11-2 last year and won the Military Bowl, defeating University of Pittsburgh, 44-28.
At Colts Neck, Gargiulo established several school records on the gridiron, including rushing yards in a season (1,666) and rushing touchdowns (27). In his senior year, Gargiulo led the Cougars to the NJSIAA Central Jersey, Group III championship game for the first time in program history. Even though the Cougars lost to Brick Township High School, they won a school-record 10 games (10-2) that season.
A pair of former Howell High School track and field stars, Francesca Dee and Jamie Hand, helped the Georgian Court University women’s track and field team finish fourth in the East Coast Conference Indoor Championships held in the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex.
Dee, a sophomore, smashed a 4-year-old school-best in the 500-meter dash by placing second with a new mark of 1:19.73. Teammate Hand followed in fifth place at 1:22.59.
Dee went on to run on the 4X400 relay team that also set a new Georgian Court mark (4:08.29).
Stevenson University women’s track and field team member Meghan Incantalupo from Freehold set a new school record during the Patriot Games, hosted by George Mason University.
Incantalupo, a freshman, completed the high jump event with an impressive leap of 1.46 meters. She placed 12th overall at the event and set a new school record for the Mustangs.
The record did not last long. At the Crusader Challenge at Susquehanna University, Incantalupo raised the mark to 1.47 meters while finishing 10th.
Incantalupo is a graduate of Freehold Township High School.
The Monmouth County Park System’s golf season is underway and all six county golf courses — Bel-Aire in Wall, Charleston Springs in Millstone, Hominy Hill in Colts Neck, Howell Park in Howell, Pine Brook in Manalapan and Shark River in Neptune — are open for play.
To get the most out of the season and the county courses, golfers should buy a Golf Card. These cards provide access to the Park System tee time reservation system (accessible online at www.monmouthcountygolf.org or by telephone at 732-758-8383).
County and non-county golfers can choose between a one-year Golf Card for $45 or a discounted two-year Golf Card for $75. Cards will be honored one or two years from the date of purchase. Non-resident golfers can also choose a Full Privilege Card for $250. Good for one year, this card makes the holder eligible for resident rates. Junior Golf Cards are available for county and non-county golfers through the age of 20 for $20 and are good for one year.
Acceptable identification for a Resident Golf Card is a valid New Jersey photo driver’s license with a Monmouth County street address, a current residential property tax bill with the applicant’s name and Monmouth County street address, or a yearly (or longer) residential lease and one of the following: a valid driver license, last year’s Golf Card, a vehicle registration card, a voter registration card or a New Jersey hunting and/or fishing license with name and street address that matches the first form of ID. For a non-resident Golf Card, a valid driver license is accepted. Utility bills, bank statements and credit cards are not acceptable.
Once golfers have their card, they will be able to take advantage of the Park System’s 2016 golf specials, including the Golf Card Rewards Program and Friends & Family Golf Card Special. The Park System also has a 9-Hole Plus offering that doesn’t require a card.
