Six students from the Hopewell Valley Regional School District were recognized at the Mercer Science and Engineering Fair, held March 13-15 at Rider UniverSity.
The fair has been held for more than 50 years for students of Mercer County in grades 4 through 12.
This year’s fair was run by the Mercer Science and Engineering Club.
Charlotte Michaluk, a 4th grader at Bear Tavern Elementary, was awarded Most Superior Elementary Project by sponsor Rider University for her project, “Sand Mineral Variation Within Southern New England as a Way to Map Geological Transformation.” It was also cited for superior achievement in the elementary division by the Mercer Science and Engineering Club.
Lucas Zapata-Sanin, a 4th grader at Stony Brook Elementary School, was given a meritorious achievement award in elementary school science, for “Does Microwave Food Have More Radiation Than Fresh Food And Is It Bad For My Health?”
Timberlane Middle School 6th graders Emilie and Christopher Sawicki won honorable mention, field of physical science, junior division, for “Survival of the Fit-Test.”
Timberlane Middle School 8th grader Sonja Michaluk was given multiple prizes for her “Taxa Richness Variation within the Stony Brook Watershed and the Surrounding Area: Comparison of Macroinvertebrate Families.”
The project was given Rider University’s Most Superior Junior Biological Project award and cited for superior achievement in the junior division in the field of biological science by the Mercer Science and Engineering Club, as well as the Naval Science Award, Junior Division by the Office of Naval Research.
Hopewell Valley Central High School 9th grader Christian Zapata-Sanin won several awards for his computer science project, “Using Computer Simulations to Investigate the Reduction of the Number of Crashes in Intersections.”
The project placed first in the Senior Division category of Robotics and Intelligent Machines from Mercer Science and Engineering Club, and the Computer and Engineering Award, Senior Division, from the Mercer Science and Engineering Club. He also was given a $200 award and a certificate from the Intel Corporation, the Intel for Excellence in Computer Science award.
