Levinson, who died at the age of 68 in August 2015, was a principal in Freehold Borough’s elementary schools, including the Freehold Learning Center, Dutch Lane Road, for 15 years.

On Feb. 22, the Board of Education passed a resolution renaming the Freehold Learning Center library the Dennis Levinson Memorial Library in honor of the longtime educator.

“The district and the Freehold Learning Center school community are proud to be dedicating the school library in memory of former principal, Mr. Dennis Levinson. He was a great advocate for literacy and a tireless leader in our Freehold Borough schools. (This is) a lasting memory of his outstanding educational career,” Superintendent of Schools Rocco Tomazic, said.

The board’s resolution recalled Levinson as a “kind, generous and passionate advocate for student literacy.”

“We are so proud to honor Mr. Levinson’s legacy with the renaming of our library, especially during one of his favorite weeks of the year, Read Across America,” Freehold Learning Center Principal William Smith said.

Smith was hired by Levinson to teach fifth grade in the 2006-07 school year.

“To have his memory here permanently will be a reminder to all of us to focus on the child, just as he did.” Smith said.
