Boy Scouts Matthew R. Magliozzi, 17, the son of Frederick and Barbara Magliozzi of Marlboro, and Jonathan Ivan Markunas, 18, the son of David and Irene Markunas of Millstone Township, have reached the highest rank in scouting: Eagle Scout. The rank of Eagle Scout is attained by less than 1 percent of all those who begin the journey through Boy Scouting, according to a press release.

The young men are members of Freehold Boy Scout Troop 18 and they received their Eagle award at a ceremony that was held at the Knights of Columbus Hall, Freehold Borough, on March 6.

Matthew’s Eagle Scout project benefited the Freehold Knights of Columbus Council. Matthew directed his fellow Scouts, family members and friends in the repair and expansion of the Knights’ parking lot. His group of volunteers built 330 feet of wooden curbing around the parking lot as well as providing landscaping and cleanup services, according to the press release. His efforts provided better curb appeal and eliminated safety concerns for members and visiting guests. Matthew attends Marlboro High School and plans to attend college this fall in the pursuit of a degree in accounting.

Jonathan’s Eagle Scout project consisted of building 300 feet of three-rail horse fence at Celtic Charms horse farm in Howell. Celtic Charms is a charitable nonprofit farm where people with disabilities are given the opportunity to experience the benefits of therapeutic horsemanship, according to the press release.

The fence was built to create an additional paddock for the farm to house additional horses and accommodate more riding students each week. Jonathan attends Notre Dame High School, Lawrenceville. Upon graduation, he plans to attend college to study natural sciences or biology to pursue a career in pediatric dentistry.
