County library to celebrate Shakespeare

The Monmouth County Library will host a series of events during April in honor of William Shakespeare, who is credited as the author of numerous plays and poems that are still performed and recited today.

Program Director Donna Mansfield said there will be Shakespeare-themed events in honor of the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death (April 23, 1616). All of the events are free to attend.

The Marlboro Library will show the 1968 film adaptation of Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet” on April 20 at 2 p.m. The Manalapan headquarters will screen the film on April 18 at 7 p.m.

The Colts Neck Library will hold a poetry workshop, “Poemeo, Poemeo, Wherefore Art Thou?” on April 23 at 2 p.m. Attendees will learn about Shakespeare’s sonnets and may write a sonnet themselves, according to a press release. The workshop will be facilitated by Evelyn Hampton and Flora Higgins.

The Manalapan headquarters will host Shakespeare Live! performing “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” on April 17 at 2 p.m. Two River Theater Artistic Director John Dias will present a Shakespeare 101 lecture on April 18 at 7 p.m. and Raconteur Radio will perform a radio version of “Macbeth” on April 21 at 7 p.m.

The headquarters will screen the 2015 film version of “Macbeth” on April 20 at 2 p.m. and the 1999 film version of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” on April 21 at 2 p.m.

At 2 p.m. April 22, the headquarters will screen “10 Things I Hate About You,” a 1999 film that is a modernization of Shakespeare’s “Taming of the Shrew” retold in a late 1990s American high school setting.

On April 23, the headquarters will host a live streamed event from the Folger Shakespeare Library, “The Wonder of Will Live.” The event will celebrate Shakespeare and his legacy on the 400th anniversary of his death.
