EAST BRUNSWICK — The East Brunswick Democratic Committee has made its choices for the Nov. 8 general election.

East Brunswick Board of Education member Brad Cohen has been chosen by the committee to run for mayor while incumbent Councilman Michael Spadafino is planning to run with Sterley Stanley, who is the president of the Board of Fox Meadow Condominium Association and director of the New Jersey State Democratic South Asian American Caucus in Middlesex County.

“I am honored to lead a team of candidates who are deeply committed to East Brunswick. Our main focus will be on revitalizing the Route 18 commercial corridor. We are confident that, with the right leadership, we can help restore East Brunswick to the regional center for shopping, dining and culture that it once was,” Cohen said.

“We cannot be more proud of the talented and experienced slate of candidates that the Democrats have put forward this year,” East Brunswick Democratic Chairman David Lonski said in a press release. “From revitalizing the Route 18 corridor, to restoring and improving the services for which so many families originally moved to East Brunswick, our team will work tirelessly to revitalize our town and make it a place that we can all be proud to call home.”

There are two three-year council seats up for grabs that are currently held by Spadafino and two-term Democratic Councilwoman Denise Contrino.

According to Contrino, she did not choose to seek re-election in order to focus on her family.

Current Mayor Kevin McEvoy, a Democrat, is serving as mayor for the remainder of David Stahl’s term. Stahl, a Democrat who turned Republican during his last term, left the mayoral office in January in order to become a municipal judge in Woodbridge Township.
