Performers of the week

The spring scholastic season is now in full bloom so check out the following athletes who delivered sparkling performances this past week.

BASEBALL

South River High School’s Dalton Dougherty struck out 11 batters on his way to pitching a no-hitter and leading the Rams to a 4-0 victory over Carteret in Somerset.

In addition to his no-hitter, it was Dougherty who broke up a scoreless tie in the fourth inning with a bases clearing, three-RBI triple in the fourth inning.

This was Dougherty’s second career no-hitter.

Frank LoGuidice tossed a complete-game three-hitter and delivered the game-winning RBI as J.P. Stevens edged, Edison, 2-1.

LoGuidice, who was 2-3 with a double on the day, delivered his walk-off game-winning single with two-outs in the last of the seventh on Stevens’ home field..

SOFTBALL

In an early-season showdown for leadership in Shore Conference A North Division softball, Middletown North slipped past Middletown South, 2-1, thanks to a complete-game five-hitter from pitcher Riley Kiernan.

The game was played at Middletown North.

 

South Brunswick High School’s Carly Rybinski went 3-4 with a triple and five RBI in the Vikings’ 15-5 win  over Edison.

BOYS’ LACROSSE

Alec Mintz of Red Bank Catholic joined an exclusive club when he registered his 100th career point for the boys’ lacrosse team. Mintz reached the century mark in the Casey’s 8-7 victory over Colts Neck. He had three goals and three assists in the victory.

This milestone followed his achievement from this past winter when Mintz reached the 100-point milestone with the RBC ice hockey team.

GIRLS’ LACROSSE

North Brunswick High School’s Samantha Mehalick scored eight goals in Raiders 18-4 victory over neighboring South Brunswick.

The senior ranks among the leading goal-scorers in the state with 26 in the team’s first four game.

TRACK AND FIELD

Howell High School’s Stephanie Bock had the best throw in both the shot put (38-7 ½) and discus (118-0) helping the Rebels win both relay events at Matawan High School’s Husky Relays. Howell girls won the Division 2 championship with 114 points.

Brandon Davis of Old Bridge High School, dominated the field events at the Metuchen Relays on April 10. He won the javelin (175-9) and discus (171-9) finals and took second in the shot put (56-5 ½). Old Bridge won all three relays. In the shot put, Davis’ teammate Dominic Walton took first in the final throwing 57-6 ½.

GOLF

Rumson-Fair Haven High School’s Reid Bedell won the Wall Invitational Golf Tournament held at Jumping Brook in Neptune Township on April 4. Bedell and Westfield’s Justin Lankler both carded 74’s on the par-72 course in the rain forcing a playoff. The Rumson senior won on the second playoff hole with a par.

Bedell followed that up with a triumph at the Garden State Cup held April 6 at the par-72 Blue Heron Pines Gold Club in Galloway Township. His winning score was 75.
