Free CPR training to be offered

MANALAPAN – Individuals age 11 and over may attend a special event and receive free instruction in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on June 4. Residents of all towns are welcome to attend.

First Aid & CPR, LLC, will host a free American Heart Association hands-only training event at the Manalapan Community Center, 114 Route 33. Training will be offered every hour on the hour from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., according to a press release.

Attendees will be trained to spot a sudden cardiac arrest, call 911 and provide hands-only CPR and the use of an automated external defibrillator (AED). According to the press release, these actions are key in the chain of survival and need to be completed as soon as possible to assist the individual who has the cardiac emergency.

Representatives from police and fire departments, emergency medical services squads, and the New Jersey Poison Control Center will be on hand to answer questions and offer information about their departments or organizations.

According to the press release, sudden cardiac arrest is a leading killer in the United States, with about 400,000 deaths per year. Nearly one in three victims of sudden cardiac arrest survives when the emergency is witnessed by a bystander and an AED is used. According to the press release, 70 percent of sudden cardiac arrest incidents occur in the home.
