Democratic incumbents Jaye Sims and Kevin Kane will seek re-election to their seats in November. Sims is serving as the council president in 2016.

According to his biography, Sims is a lifelong resident of Freehold Borough and is employed by the Monmouth County Health Department. He is a member of the Freehold Fire Department Goodwill Hook and Ladder Company. Sims previously worked as a dispatcher for the Freehold Fire Department and the Freehold Borough Police Department. He is married and has twin daughters.

Sims was appointed to the council in 2006 and in looking forward to running for another term he said, “I have decided to run for re-election again because I believe there is still much work to do in Freehold Borough. I believe in our residents and the development of our town. Our rich diversity and history is what makes Freehold Borough great.”

Kane, according to his biography, is a lifelong resident of Freehold Borough who was elected to the council in 2001. Since 2008, he has chaired the council’s Finance Committee. Kane is married and has three children and two grandsons.

Kane did not immediately respond to an email seeking comment about his bid for re-election.

Democrats currently hold all six Borough Council seats and the mayor’s office.

Freehold Borough Republican Chairwoman Jane Fields had no comment regarding the Republicans’ decision not to challenge the Democratic incumbents in the council race.

The deadline for individuals to file a nominating petition to run for the Borough Council under a party affiliation was April 4. The deadline for individuals to file to run for office without party affiliation is June 7.
