LONG BRANCH- A Long Branch Middle School teacher will have $2,500 to spend to help promote physical fitness.
Anthony Magliaro, a physical education and health instructor, is the recipient of the $2,500 California Casualty Academic Award. The award is presented in an effort to help relieve the impact on educators who spend an average of $500 of their own funds each year for classroom supplies and materials.
“I was in shock, I couldn’t believe it; the $2,500 will buy much-needed physical ed equipment for our kids,” he said.
“California Casualty is proud of our 16-year partnership with the NEA [National Education Association],” said California Casualty Senior Vice President Mike McCormick. “We are committed to serving educators and helping them make a difference for children.”
Magliaro, who has worked at the middle school for 14 years, describes himself as the approachable teacher who jokes around and listens to students. He takes pride in helping them when they have a bad day or when something is really bothering them.
“There is nothing better than seeing kids mature and be successful in their transition to high school,” he said.
Magliaro will now be able to purchase new balls, scooters, and workout apparatus will aid in the effort of fighting the growing trend of obesity in youth.
