The award, which recognizes Americans of all ages who have volunteered significant amounts of their time to serve their communities and their country, was granted by the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program on behalf of President Barack Obama, according to a statement released by NBTHS.

Ekta Krishnamoorthy participates in United Way events such as Barnes & Nobles gift wrapping; giving backpacks and school supplies to those in need; walking in walkathons; helping advise juveniles who have minor misdemeanors at the Juvenile Conference Committee; and volunteering at soup kitchens.

“I love volunteering because it allows me to give back to the community that has given me so much. I encourage everyone to do so,” she said.
