Felician University scored two runs under international tiebreaker rules in the bottom of the ninth inning to earn a come-from-behind 5-4 victory over visiting Mercy College in game one of the teams’ non-conference softball doubleheader April 14 at Matera Field.
Felician freshman catcher Brynne Bauman (Red Bank Catholic) was 3-for-6 on the day and drove in two runs.
Felician freshman pitcher Erin Powers (Matawan Regional) surrendered three runs in the top of the first inning of the first game, including a two-run home run to her pitching counterpart, Joelle Salisbury. But Powers kept the Mavericks off the scoreboard thereafter until the tiebreaker was enacted, allowing her offense to creep back into the game.
Reliever Danny Naif (Jackson Liberty) worked out of a bases-loaded, none-out jam in the top of the eighth inning and junior center fielder Andrew LaMura (Red Bank Catholic) lined a go-ahead two-run single in the bottom half as Felician University rallied for a 5-3 victory in its second game over visiting Post University and a sweep of the teams’ Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference baseball doubleheader April 13 at the Lyndhurst Recreation Complex.
The first game’s final score of 21-0 represented the most runs for the Golden Falcons since a 23-5 home victory over Dominican (N.Y.) College on Mar. 22, 2014. Felician scored three runs in the third inning, then broke the game open with an eight-run fourth. Ralph Caccavale had a two-run single and Matt Kleinstein (Colts Neck) had a three-run triple to highlight the uprising.
East Brunswick High School is hosting the annual Boys Volleyball FSHD Fundraiser Game to raise money for Facioscapulohumeral Muscular Dystrophy May 10 at 6 p.m. in the main gym.
You can still sign up for Top Notch Sports’ weekly spring soccer clinic led by NYC FC player R.J. Allen every Thursday though May 26 at Top Notch Sports in Aberdeen. The clinic is for ages 8-12 only. Clinic times are 6-7 p.m. each day, and the cost is $100 per player. There is limited enrollment.
