Hillsborough teens star in ‘School of Rock’ show
April 27, 28 and 29 and May 1 — Matthew Conlon of Hillsborough is cast in the lead as the renegade substitute teacher in “School of Rock,” based on the movie starring Jack Black, to be presented at 8 p.m. Friday, 2 and 8 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday at the Villagers Theatre in the Franklin Township Municipal Complex, 475 DeMott Lane, Somerset.

“School of Rock” follows Dewey Finn, a failed rock star who poses as a substitute teacher at a prep school. Disinterested in academic work, Dewey creates his own curriculum, turning his class into a rock band.
Hillsborough’s Sabrina Schubert will play Rosalie Mullins, the uptight and stern school principal wary of Finn. Evan Centofanti plays Ned Schneebly, Finn’s longtime friend, former bandmate and current roommate.
Rock-roll band to play outside at Manville library
Sat., April 30 — Manville Library at 100 South 10th Ave., hosts an outside concert, 5:30-7 p.m., by the cover band The McGuineas, which plays jazz, swing and rock and roll from artists like Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby, Elvis Presley and Billy Joel, with the occasional Bruce Springsteen and Van Morrison.

Drop used clothing, toys at Woods Road School
Sat., April 30 — The Woods Road School and Home Association will collect used clothing and toys at Woods Road Elementary School from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, April 30. Drop off will be in front of the school at 401 South Woods Road.
Proceeds fund projects for the school.
Tie items well in plastic bags:
• Wearable and usable clothing (men, women and children);
• Shoes (all shoes must be bagged separately, not mixed with clothes);
• Belts, handbags, backpacks, hats, gloves and scarves;
• Pillows, blankets, quilts, sheets, curtains and table linens;
• Stuffed animals, bikes and hard toys (in cardboard boxes)
Unacceptable are over-sized toys, strollers, high chairs, car seats, cribs, play centers, bouncers, walkers, swings, books, VCR tapes, or CD/DVDs.

Free class will help prepare people for citizenship exam
April 30-June 18: Judy Rothberg from Literacy Volunteers of Somerset County will lead a free U.S. citizenship qualification class on six Saturdays from 10 a.m. to noon at the Manville Library at 100 S. 10th Ave.
The 16-hour course focuses on the civics, history and vocabulary needed to pass the citizenship test and interview. All materials will be supplied by the Peapack-Gladstone Woman’s Club. For info, call 908-722-9722.
Altar Rosary Society to hold Mom’s Day brunch

Firehouse auxiliary to hold Mother’s Day flower sale
May 6 and 7 — The Manville North End Volunteer Fire Company No. 3 and Ladies Auxiliary will hold their annual Mother’s Day flower sale of plants for gift giving. A Special Sale Night will be held on Friday, May 6, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the firehouse at the corner of North 8th Avenue and Louis Street.
The sale moves outside to the parking lot in the center of town located on South Main Street and North Arlington Street in Manville on Saturday, May 7, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Flea markets open up at Route 206 firehouse
Sat., May 14 — Flea market will be held twice a month at the Hillsborough Fire Co. No. 2 firehouse on Route 206.
The flea markets are held from 9 a.m. to as long as there are customers. Markets are located on the grass adjacent to the firehouse.
Parking will be on the grass and behind the firehouse. There will be no parking next to the firehouse or in the driveway.

‘Salute to Veterans’ breakfast precedes holiday parade
Sat., May 28 — Hillsborough veterans, spouses and widows are invited as guests at the annual Salute to Veterans breakfast preceding the township parade at the Municipal Complex on South Branch Road.
Registration before May 23 is required to attend the breakfast. People are asked to register online through the recreation department website or by calling the department at 908-369-4832. Registration forms are also available at the administration office.
Check in for the pre-parade breakfast is at 7:30 a.m. Following the breakfast, guests and visitors can board buses for transport to the start of the parade route. The parade steps off at 10:30 a.m. Veterans will lead the parade. The Garden of Honor Ceremony will take place at the end of the parade.
Business group to host networking night at Landing
Wed., June 1 — The Hillsborough Economic & Business Development Commission will host an evening networking event in the Farmhouse Banquet Room of “The Landing“ on Amwell Road from 6 to 8 p.m.
The cost is $10. There will be food and soft drinks provided and a cash bar will be available.
