Games That You Can’t Miss

Tournaments are winding down and there are plenty of enticing matchups spread across our local fields, tracks, gyms and golf courses.

So while you may need to bring along an umbrella, do bring along your taste for appetizing events that are featured below on the  scholastic sports menu over the following days.

Jackson Liberty High School’s softball team will play for the Ocean County Tournament championship at Toms River South High School on May 7. Jackson Liberty’s opponent has not been decided yet although it is expected to be top-seed Lacey Township. Jackson Liberty is the No. 2 seed.

The Lions are fresh off upsetting the state’s top-ranked team, St. John Vianney, in a non-division regular-season game last week.

The Monmouth County Softball Tournament is down to its Final Four. Top-seeded St. John Vianney is playing No. 5 Howell in Holmdel and second-seeded Middletown North meets Red Bank Catholic, the No. 6 seed, in Middletown. Both games are scheduled for May 7. 

May 7 is also the date for the Monmouth County Baseball Tournament semifinals.

Christian Brothers Academy and Middletown South meet in Lincroft in one semifinal. Middletown South, the No. 5 seed, is riding a 10-game winning streak that has propelled the Eagles into first place in the Shore Conference A North Division The last team to beat Middletown South, however, was CBA, which is the No. 1 seed.

The other semifinal pits the No. 2 seed, Red Bank Catholic, against third-seeded Howell. That game will be played at the Count Basie Field in Red Bank.

Who is the best girl golfer in the Greater Middlesex Conference?

We’ll find out on May 5 when the GMC Tournament is played at the Concordia Golf Course in Monroe Township.

Allentown High School’s girls’ lacrosse team has reached the Mercer County Tournament semifinals. The Redbirds are playing top-seed Hopewell Valley on May 5 at Notre Dame in Lawrenceville.

North Brunswick High School’s girls’ lacrosse team will put its undefeated record (14-0) on the line at home on May 7 when the Raiders take on a North Jersey power, Bernards, which is 12-2.

Old Bridge High School’s boys’ volleyball team will be taking on undefeated Southern Regional,  which is 23-0, on May 7 as part of a quad meet at Fair Lawn High School in Bergen County.  It will be the Greater Middlesex Conference against the Shore Conference in this important non-conference outing.

There’s plenty of track and field action with the Monmouth and Ocean County Relays on May 5 and 6.

Long Branch High School is the site for the Monmouth Championships on May 5.

The Ocean County Relays are May 6 at Southern Regional High School in Manahawkin.

Holmdel High school is holding its Night of 3,200’s on May 6, with the state indoor 3,200 champion, Jordan Brannan of Colts Neck, expected to lead the field.

Long Branch High School is also holding one of the oldest meets in the state, the Long Branch Invitational on May 7.
