NORTH BRUNSWICK – More than a dozen students were honored for their consideration of the environment through the North Brunswick Earth Day Bookmark Contest.
The winners were presented with awards during the North Brunswick Council meeting on May 2:
- First grade, first place, Selma Elbenni from Judd Elementary
- Second grade, first place, Maya Faccone from Parsons Elementary; second place, Johanna Easo from John Adams Elementary; third place, Jezlyn Easo, from John Adams
- Third grade, first place, Jessica Godun from Judd
- Fourth grade, first place, Sydney Faccone from Parsons; second place, Penelope Jones from Judd; and a tie for third place, Chinmayi and Karunya Chittamuri from Parsons
- Fifth grade, first place, Anika Batki from Parsons; Anjali Gupta from Livingston Park Elementary; and a tie for third place, Nicholas Amodio and Kevin Gonzalez from Parsons
- Sixth grade, first place, Farouk Adeleke from Linwood Middle school
- Seventh grade, first place, Fareedat Adeleke from Linwood
The bookmarks will be on display in the front lobby of the North Brunswick Municipal Building at 710 Hermann Road. In addition, the top three winners – Anika Batki, Selma Elbenni and Sydney Faccone – will have their designs turned into plastic bookmarks that will be handed out at events throughout the year.
“Look at all these smiling faces. It’s beautiful,” said Richard Fein of the North Brunswick Open Space Committee.
“They all worked very hard. It’s all very beautiful,” Councilwoman Shanti Narra said.
On a related topic, because several students decided to focus on gardening, Narra took the opportunity to remind residents that the North Brunswick Community Garden is now open at the Pulda Farm off of Route 130. Plots are still available for residents to plant herbs, vegetables and flowers.
