The Monroe Township High School boys tennis team has finished every season since 2011 with a winning record, and that will remain the case this spring.

The Falcons are 11-2 and atop the Greater Middlesex Conference (GMC) White Division standings.

“Our goals were to place in the top four at the GMC Tournament and win the White Division,” Monroe head coach Matt Olszewski said. “We managed to finish fourth at the GMCs, and we’re still in first place in the division despite losing for the first (and only) time to Highland Park [High School]. If we can win out in the rest of our division matches, we’ll capture the title.”

When the NJSIAA team tournament pairings were announced, the Falcons received the sixth seed in Central Jersey, Group IV and will host 11th-seeded Hillsborough High School in the first round. The winner advances to a meeting at third-seeded East Brunswick High School.

Since the loss to the Owls, the Falcons have won twice, including a 5-0 whitewash of North Brunswick Township High School May 9.

Monroe’s winning ways have turned out to be a habit in recent years. The Falcons’ record each spring since they finished 9-9 five seasons ago are as follows: 14-6 in 2015, 12-9 in 2014, 9-6 in 2013, 16-0 in 2012 and 14-2 in 2011.

Olszewski said he has relied on a tried-and-true formula since taking over as head coach two years ago for veteran mentor Dennis Kelliher.

“I pretty much let the players settle the first through third singles spots through playoff matches,” he said. “But I get more involved when it comes to pairing up the doubles players. I try to match players according to their strengths, weaknesses and tendencies.”

Olszewski believes smart, hard-working athletes are what he looks for in tennis players because they are most likely to succeed. Monroe’s roster is filled with those kinds of players and like many surrounding communities, including East Brunswick and Edison, they join the tennis team already in the game and ready to contribute.

Senior Amit Padmanabhan occupies the first singles position, sophomore Vikram Manisankar plays second singles and senior Cian Desai is at third singles. The first doubles team is comprised of junior Vishal Gumidyala and freshman Harshit Gupta. Senior Frank Sigismondo and sophomore Daniel Vudin make up the second doubles team.

Asked what his team has achieved this year that has made him most proud, Olszewski said his second and third singles players and second doubles team all finished in fourth place at the highly competitive GMC Tournament.

“That was a good showing for us,” he said.
