Pair charged with possession of drugs in Allentown

ALLENTOWN – A man and a woman were taken into custody after they allegedly attempted to flee from police officers and crashed their vehicle at an entrance to Interstate 195.

Allentown Patrolman Anthony Rando said the incident took place at about 7 p.m. May 6 when patrolmen Richard Lerche and Chris Poss attempted to stop a Nissan Altima near the intersection of Probasco Drive and North Main Street. Rando said the officers believed the driver was speeding.

When the officers attempted to pull over the Nissan, the driver allegedly sped up in an attempt to flee eastbound on Interstate 195. That attempt was short-lived, however, as the driver lost control of the vehicle. The car struck a curb on an entrance ramp to the highway and then came to rest, police said.

Officers identified the occupants of the vehicle as the driver, Chelsea A. Price, 23, of Jackson, and a passenger, Ryan D. Oliver, 26, of Hamilton Township.

Rando said the officers located substances believed to be marijuana and heroin, a hypodermic needle and other drug paraphernalia. Price and Oliver were taken into police custody.

Price was charged with possession of heroin, possession with intent to distribute and eluding police. Oliver was charged with possession of heroin, possession of marijuana, possession of a hypodermic needle and possession of drug paraphernalia, according to Rando.

Bail for Price was set at $50,000 and she was initially lodged in the Monmouth County Jail, Freehold Township. Oliver was released on a summons pending a court date.
