Rider dies during Jersey Fresh International competition

UPPER FREEHOLD – A 33-year-old female equestrian from Michigan sustained injuries that proved to be fatal when she fell off her horse during the Jersey Fresh International Three-Day Event at the Horse Park of New Jersey.

According to organizers of the competition, Phillippa Humphreys was pronounced dead at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, Hamilton Township, on May 14.

“All of us connected with the Jersey Fresh International are deeply saddened by today’s tragic news and we extend our condolences to Philippa’s husband, Peter, and to her entire family,” event chairman Dan Wunderlich said.

Humphreys, of Rockford, Mich., was a native of Chester, England.

The Jersey Fresh Invitational Three-Day Event was a qualifying event for the U.S. Olympic Eventing Team, as well as determining participants for the U.S. and Canadian World Equestrian Games and Pan Am Games teams.

Wunderlich said the incident occurred during the cross country event when Humphreys fell off her horse, Rich N Famous, at fence 16 of the course. He said the horse was not injured.
