MARLBORO – Marlboro police are reminding residents to lock their vehicles and remove the key fobs. According to a press release, the warmer weather brings an increase in motor vehicle thefts. Most of these thefts occur because the owner has left the key fob inside the vehicle or inside the home in a location close enough to allow the vehicle to start. The thieves will try door handles until they find one open and with the keys inside, according to police.
“The Marlboro Division of Police patrols all 250 miles of local, county and state roads in the 32.5 square miles that make up Marlboro,” Police Chief Bruce Hall said. “Officers are on the road 24 hours a day, seven days a week, but we cannot be everywhere at once. We urge residents to help prevent thefts by locking your cars and taking the key fob with you.”
Although there is no pattern to neighborhoods being targeted, police said the cars stolen are typically considered high end, such as Audi, BMW, Mercedes, Range Rover, Lexus and Jeep SRT.

Public safety has been and will always be a priority in my administration and our police department does a wonderful job of working together with our community. Police recommend that residents follow the safety precautions for their home by locking the doors and setting an alarm, if available. Upon request and at no charge, the Community Policing Division will visit a resident’s home to perform a safety check and make recommendations.
