MONROE — A township resident faces multiple charges, including attempted murder, after a team of law enforcement officers resolved a potentially dangerous situation at his home on May 20.
More than 20 law enforcement officers from the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Special Operations Response Team (SORT) were dispatched shortly after police were called at 9:34 a.m. to an undisclosed location, according to a statement prepared by Middlesex County Prosecutor Andrew C. Carey and Monroe Police Chief Michael E. Lloyd.
Robert A. Witkowski, 47, reportedly surrendered at 12:55 p.m. following negotiations with SORT. No shots were fired during the incident and no police officers were injured, according to officials.
Witkowski has been charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault, aggravated assault during an incident of domestic violence, possession of a firearm for an unlawful purpose, criminal mischief, hindering his apprehension and committing an offense as a previously convicted felon. Bail has been set at $350,000.
A woman who was located on a second floor of the home was taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick, where she was being treated for a head injury, officials said.
SORT and the Monroe Township Police Department were assisted by the Manalapan Police Department and the Monmouth County Sheriff’s Department, which provided a patrol dog.
