The No. 1 boys’ golfer in New Jersey was crowned during what was another stretch when our local scholastic athletes delivered a round of star-studded performances.
Reid Bedell of Rumson-Fair Haven captured the NJSIAA Golf Tournament of Champions when he fired a six-under-par 66 on the par-72 Hopewell Valley Golf Club course on May 23.
He finished three strokes clear of the state’s best high school golfers to firmly establish himself as the king of the fairways in New Jersey.
Coinciding with the T of C title, the Bulldog golfer also won the Group II state championship. The senior will continue his golf career at Lafayette College.
Freehold High School’s Dan Chiusano authored a perfect game in the Colonials’ 3-0 victory over Manasquan in the first round of the Shore Conference Baseball Tournament.
The left-hander was extremely economical as he needed just 66 total pitches (49 for strikes) to complete his gem. The perfect game improved his record for the season to 5-4.
It was the second no-hitter of the season for Freehold. Tom Holdorf no-hit Keyport in the Monmouth County Tournament.
Eric Reardon pitched a complete game when North Brunswick, the No. 16 seed, knocked off the No. 1 seed, East Brunswick, 2-0, in the first round of the NJSIAA Central Jersey, Group IV baseball playoffs.
Reardon, a lefty who is headed to Rutgers University, held the Bears to two hits and struck out six n route to the upset victory.
An RBI double each from Felix Diaz and Andrew Tan produced North Brunswick’s two runs.
Mackenzie Garrick struck out 10 and had two hits, including a triple, and two runs scored as South River defeated Keyport, 7-5, in the opening round of the NJSIAA Central Jersey, Group II softball tournament.
The Rams trailed 5-2 heading into the last of the sixth inning when they rallied for five runs to defeat the Red Raiders.
Breona Hill, who was 3-4 on the day, scoring two runs, helped ignite the rally in the sixth inning for South River.
Shore Regional High School’s Sarah George connected on her 200th career goal as the Blue Devils began their quest for the NJSIAA South Jersey, Group I lacrosse championship with an 18-3 triumph over Gill St. Bernard’s in the first round.
George led the Shore effort with five goals. The senior is an Ohio State commit.
Shaelyn O’Leary deposited four goals and Marin Hartshorn recorded a goal and four assists as Allentown High School’s girls’ lacrosse team defeated Colts Neck, 14-4, in the first round of the NJSIAA South Jersey, Group III tournament.
Long jumper Gianna Gomez broke a 29-year-old record at Marlboro High School when she won the long jump at the Shore Conference Track and Field Championships held at Central Regional High School. The sophomore leaped 17-11 ½ to surpass the former school record of 17-9 set by Lorelei Boggs in 1987.
Dave Goncalves collected 30 assists and 11 digs in leading St. Joseph’s of Metuchen High School to a three-set victory over East Brunswick in the final of the Greater Middlesex Conference Boys Volleyball Tournament.
The Falcons, the No. 2 seed, dropped the first set to top-seeded East Brunswick, 23-25, before rallying to win the next two, 25-13 and 25-21, to claim the title.
Justin Wain’s straight-sets victory at first singles highlighted Holmdel’s 5-0 triumph over Rumson-Fair Haven in the NJSIAA Central Jersey, Group II boys’ tennis tournament championship match.
