WHAT’S GOING ON for the week of 6/3/16

Sat., June 4 
The annual Strawberry Festival, sponsored by the First Presbyterian Church of Cranbury Board of Deacons, will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. Strawberries, cake, ice cream, hamburgers, hot dogs, music, games, face painting, a clown and more will be available. The church is at 22 S. Main St., Cranbury. The event will be held rain or shine and benefits the Deacons benevolence fund. 
Sun., June 5 
The Cranbury Museum will host a program titled “When We Were Young: Shopping Along Cranbury’s Main Street” to compliment the museum’s current exhibit, “Merchants of Main Street: A Stroll Through the Shoppes of Cranbury’s Past.” The program, which begins at 1:30 p.m., will feature a panel of community members who lived and shopped on Main Street, sharing personal experiences and family stories about the businesses. A new group called DeathCafe will meet at 6:30 p.m. the Perkins Restaurant at 50 Princeton Hightstown Road, East Windsor. The meeting offers an opportunity to gather in a safe, non-judgmental environment to discuss any aspect of death that may be of interest to you. Times are changing and the taboo regarding discussing death needs to go by the wayside. It will be an evening of interesting and informative discussion on all matters and issues relating to that taboo subject of death. RSVP to Laurie at 609-443-1844. 

Friday Afternoon Movie: “Concussion” will be shown at 2 p.m. at the Hickory Corner Branch, Mercer County Library System, 138 Hickory Corner Road, East Windsor. See the popular movie starring Will Smith. Based on the true story of the doctor who discovered chronic traumatic encephalopathy, known as CTE in football players, and the uphill battle he faced in bringing the information to the public. Rated PG-13; 123 minutes. A small snack will be provided. No registration is necessary.
A pasta dinner to benefit Better Beginnings in Hightstown will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the fellowship hall at First Presbyterian Church, 22 S. Main St., Cranbury. Tickets may be purchased at the door and are $8 per person and $5 for students and seniors. Children five years old and under eat free. 

“Remembering Downton Abbey” will be presented in the Fellowship Hall of the First Presbyterian Church of Cranbury, 22 S. Main St., Cranbury. This event will include team trivia questions about Downton Abbey and England, a silent auction of Downton Abbey memorabilia and other special items, door prizes, projected photos from the series, refreshments and a few surprises. Tickets at $12 each are available now by mailing a check by June 1, payable to The Woman’s Club of Cranbury to: WCC “Remembering Downton Abbey,” 4 Labaw Drive, Cranbury, N.J., 08512. Please include a self- addressed stamped envelope, for the return of your tickets, unless you would like them held at the door. Proceeds will benefit Woman’s Club of Cranbury charities, including their Scholarship Fund.

Cranbury Museum, 4 Park Place East, 1-4 p.m., features the exhibit, “Merchants of Main Street: A Stroll Through Through the Shoppes of Cranbury’s Past,” which celebrates the creativity, hard work and entrepreneurial skills of the Main Street Merchants of the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries. Come take a stroll down Main Street, visit our merchants and view their wares and services. This exhibit will be displayed through August, 2016. 

Get Balanced will be presented at 2 p.m. at the Hickory Corner Branch, Mercer County Library System, 138 Hickory Corner Road, East Windsor, N.J. Attend this informative session to learn how to improve your balance and about what you can do to prevent falls. Please wear sturdy shoes and comfortable clothes for the exercise component. The Thyroid’s Role in Your Health will be presented at 7 p.m. at the Hickory Corner Branch, Mercer County Library System, 138 Hickory Corner Road, East Windsor, N.J. Weight gain, fatigue, depression, muscle aches, sleep problems, high cholesterol, and low libido can all be signs that your thyroid isn’t working properly. Join Joseph A. Beth El Synagogue of East Windsor will be hosting its 7th Annual American Barbecue Carlebach (ABC) Shabbat at 6 p.m. Kick off the summer season with outdoor services featuring tunes of Shlomo Carlebach followed by a BBQ dinner. Beth El Synagogue of East Windsor Genealogy Club will present Art Finkle and a discussion on the Jewish Community that settled into the Trenton area at 7:30 p.m. Art is the chair of the Trenton Jewish Historical Society and will delve into the immigrant periods of a displaced people adapting to a completely new environment. He will highlight Trenton’s institutions, its work and its eventual economic success, and explore the second generation Russian community along with the older and smaller German Jewish community. Trenton is one of many small cities that served as havens for Jewish refugees who came to the land of opportunity to eventually achieve the American dream. Art also plans to highlight the history of Beth El Synagogue, whose congregation dates back to 1906. The Rotary Club of Robbinsville Hamilton will host “ROTARUN”, a 5K race and fundraiser to benefit veterans groups and local charities, in Veterans’ Park in Hamilton Township, N.J. Sign-in for runners will be from 7:30-8:30 a.m. and the race will start at 9 a.m. Prizes will be awarded to the first 3 runners in several categories. There will also be a 1K fun walk. Registration forms are available at First Choice Bank (Route 130 at Shoppes at Hamilton), Pacers Princeton Running Store (7 Palmer Square West, Princeton), HVCB/Northfield Bank (corner of Youngs and Quakerbridge Roads) and Affiance, LLC (941 Whitehorse Ave., Ste. 18-19, Hamilton).
