‘Shanghai Ghetto’ film, talk on tap at library

Local resident and Shanghai Ghetto survivor Henry Meisel will appear at 2 p.m. June 19 at the Old Bridge Public Library Main Branch, Route 516 and Cottrell Road, for a documentary screening and discussion about the ghetto.

The 2002 film “Shanghai Ghetto” examines the plight of 20,000 German and Eastern-European Jews who were stripped of their possessions and rights in the 1930s and forced to flee to an unlikely destination to avoid persecution from the Nazis. Unprepared for life in a port city in the Far East, thousands of refugees spent years attempting to resume their lives. Meisel, who lived for 10 years in Shanghai, will speak about his experiences. A question-and-answer session will follow the discussion and the 95-minute screening.
