MIDDLETOWN – A local dental practice has awarded $500 scholarships to a graduating senior from each of the local public high schools who are planning to pursue careers in health care, including medicine, nursing, dentistry, chiropractic and physical therapy.

This is the seventh year Newman Springs Dental Care, a dental practice located in the Lincroft section of the township that provides general, cosmetic and sedation dentistry, has awarded the scholarships.

Scholarship recipient Sarah Maggipinto, a Middletown High School South graduating senior, will be attending Boston University in the fall and will study biomedical engineering.

“There were several excellent candidates who were worthy of the scholarship, Sarah just stood out from the applicants,” said Mitchel Friedman, who is a dentist at Newman Springs Dental Care and is a 1976 graduate of the township’s public school system.

Friedman, whose mother, Sheila Friedman Rubin, taught in Middletown her entire career, awarded Maggipinto her scholarship at the school’s Student Awards Night June 8.

At Middletown High School North’s Senior Awards Assembly June 9, Friedman awarded the $500 scholarship to Rebecca Meehan, who will attend the University of Vermont in the fall and study pre-med.

“There were several excellent candidates who were worthy of the scholarship, Rebecca’s essay was the most compelling,” Friedman said.
