HOPEWELL TWP.: Families invited to fireflies night June 29

Enjoy “nature’s fireworks” with education director Jeff Hoagland at the Stony Brook-Millstone Watershed Association Watershed Reserve and learn how to communicate with the fireflies Wednesday, June 29, at 8 p.m.
Adults and families (children 6 years and older) can discover the secret lives of the lightning bug, from glowworm to adult, and meet a variety of species, identifying them by different flash patterns. Registration required. $8 fee for members, and $12 for others.
Bird watching: Naturalist Tyler Christensen will lead a free walk for up-close-and-personal looks at birds from 8:30-10:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 18. Adults and families can watch foraging behavior, observe family life and learn about mist-netting and bird banding techniques. Binoculars will be available for use Registration required. Perfect for seasoned bird watchers and newcomers alike.
Block party: On Saturday, June 18, look for the SBMWA staff at Hopewell Community Day Festival’s Block Party — a fun, free afternoon (4 to 8 p.m.) with friends and neighbors to celebrate Hopewell Borough’s 125th anniversary. Held at St. Michael’s Preserve in Hopewell, the festival will include music, food, games, guided walks and a German-style beer garden.

Habitat hunt: Children ages 7 to 10 can explore unique habitats around the Watershed Reserve with teacher-naturalist Vicky Allen on Wednesdays, 10 a.m. to noon, from June 29-Aug. 10.
Dress for summery weather and outdoor adventure. Wear a hat and bring a refillable water bottle.
Register for individual classes or save when you register and pay for an entire 3-class series. Class fee: $12 for members and $18 for others. Series fee is $30 for members and $45 for others. Series I will be June 29, July 6 and 13. Explore forest, field and pond.
Series II will be July 27, Aug. 3 and 10. Explore field, stream and forest. 
