History buffs and area residents will once again be able to relive history on a walking tour of Ocean Grove.
Katie Schultheis, museum administrator for the Historical Society of Ocean Grove Museum, said a walking tour will be held three times a week. The tour will describe how Ocean Grove was founded and developed.
Ocean Grove, which is within the borders of Neptune Township, was founded in 1869 when a group of Methodist clergymen formed the Ocean Grove Camp Meeting Association to develop and operate a summer camp meeting site on the New Jersey shore, according to “Images of America – Ocean Grove.”
“They are basically history walking tours and we have a lot of seniors who come on them, too, so you are not walking all over town,” Schultheis said. “You get access to the Great Auditorium and a little lecture in there about special visitors as well as some architectural history about the auditorium.
A 90-minute tour is held every Wednesday and Friday at 1 p.m. and every Saturday at 11 a.m. from June 22 to Sept. 3. The tour has been held for about 15 years.
The tour begins at the Historical Society of Ocean Grove Museum, 50 Pitman Ave., and concludes at the Centennial Cottage at the corner of Central Avenue and McClintock Street. The tour costs $12 for adults and $10 for seniors. Tickets may be purchased on site. For more information, contact Schultheis at 732-774-1869.
