Protect your children from the sun and insects this summer

With summer comes hot, sunny days plus cool, breezy nights, enticing everyone to spend more time outdoors. As the kids head outside to the beach, camp, pool or wherever they may be, here are a few tips to avoid summer mishaps.

Remember sunscreen

Though one should wear it every day, keep in mind that the sun is strongest between the hours of 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. During this time, seek more shade and keep skin covered. Sunscreen should be applied liberally to all children 6 months and older, every two hours at lease. Always dress children with sun protection in mind, including wide brim hats, sunglasses and light colored clothing.

Keep the bugs at bay

As per the American Academy of Pediatrics, DEET-containing insect repellents are safe for children 2 years and older. If you don’t want to use a DEET-containing repellent, there are other options. Picaridin is a synthetic, odorless insect repellent ingredient that is long lasting and found to be less irritating than DEET. Other possible options are insect repellents that are all-natural and contain essential oils such as citronella, cedarwood, lemongrass and peppermint. Keep in mind that those containing the essential oils may not be strong enough for every outdoor adventure, especially in the deep woods, hiking or camping. Other ways of protection include protective clothing, socks and sneakers. Refrain from using scented lotions or sprays, and remember that bugs are most active in early morning and at dusk.

By keeping these simple tips in mind, your children can enjoy the outdoors with less mishaps.
