SPOTSWOOD — Running an extracurricular activity is no easy task, especially when you are a parent.

Six years ago, budget cuts in New Jersey affected many school districts in the state, including Spotswood. The district had no choice but to cease funding the high school varsity golf team.

“Most of the kids on the team already had three years under their belt and they wanted to keep going,” said Liz Esposito, who had children on the golf team.

Many parents then made the decision to join Esposito by not only taking over the school’s Hole-in-One golf club, but by also raising money for the team.

“Every year, the number of players on the team changes,” Esposito said. “This year, we had up to 14 players on the team.”

Numerous fundraisers, such as a casino night and a canned food drive, have been held to cover team expenses, which include transportation, equipment and setting up matches. They have also raised funds for coaches’ salaries.

On July 25, the organization will hold its annual outing at the Rossmoor Golf Club in Monroe, which is where the team practices.

The annual outing will provide the funds needed to carry on the sport for Spotswood High School and will also benefit the varsity golf team, according to a prepared statement.

The event will start at 9 a.m. following registration and will conclude at 2 p.m. A raffle will take place at 2 p.m. with the closing ceremony at 3 p.m.

For more information on the club or the golf outing, call Esposito at 732-501-9945.
