The Holmdel Theatre Company has announced its summer production, “To Kill a Mockingbird,” will be presented from July 22 through Aug. 6 at the Duncan Smith Theatre, 36 Crawfords Corner Road, Holmdel.

Shows will be at 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and 3 p.m. Sundays.

The play, which is adapted for the stage by Christopher Sergel, features a cast of over 20 actors and is based on Harper Lee’s controversial Pulitzer Prize-winning novel of the same name.

The play, set in a small town in Alabama during the Great Depression, deals with racial and social injustice. It highlights the effects on the townspeople resulting from the trial of a young black man accused of raping a white girl. The results of the trial force characters to make sense of truth and the social conventions of the day.

“I see ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ as a memory play viewed through the eyes of children whose innocence is taken away from them by the attitudes and events that take place in their small Southern town,” said Director Tom Fascatore. “We’ve assembled an outstanding cast, and this production promises to be both entertaining and thought-provoking. Audiences will find many of the ideas in the play to hold relevance in the present day.”
