WEST WINDSOR — Township Council examined a revised concept plan for the proposed renovations to a portion of the U.S. post office building, which will house the township Recreation Department and Health Departments
The plans include offices for the health inspector, the health officer, the Recreation Department manager and the assistant manager, and spaces for the health and recreation secretaries. There is a lobby and a conference room, also.
The proposed layout, which has been slightly modified, was reviewed and endorsed by the health and recreation departments, Township Council was told by Brian Aronson, the assistant manager of engineering. The open floor plan is designed to foster a collaborative environment, he said.
The plans also show enlarged windows to flood the area with light, Mr. Aronson said. Windows have been added to a wall that does not have them now, with the goal of providing more light. The heating and cooling system may need to be updated.
Outside, a new entrance will be created for the Health and Recreation departments. Broken concrete will be replaced, as necessary, and there will be some minor landscaping improvements. A separate employee entrance and parking are planned for the rear of the building.
Township Council began discussing renovations to the Municipal Building and the U.S. post office facility earlier this year. The plan calls for moving the Health Department and the Recreation Department, which occupy the former Police Department wing and a trailer outside the Municipal Building, into the vacant portion of the post office building.
The Health Department and the Recreation Department have outgrown their spaces. The Health Department lacks a private area where visitors can discuss issues. Township officials would like to remove the trailer, which has outlived its useful life.
Moving those departments to a portion of the U.S. post office building — which is owned by West Windsor Township — would allow township officials to make renovations and repairs to the Municipal Building, which was built in the 1970s. The roof at the Municipal Building has been leaking for many years.
About half of the U.S. post office building would be renovated for the two departments. The U.S. Postal Service moved some of its functions to another location, freeing up about 2,700 square feet for the Health Department and Recreation Department.
