Bear retreated back to the woods after reported sighting in Milltown

MILLTOWN — A black bear was sighted in the area of South Brook Drive during the evening of July 7.

The bear was reportedly picking through trash cans, according to an advisory sent out by the Milltown Police Department around 9:30 p.m. The bear had since retreated back into the woods.

The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection’s Division of Fish and Wildlife was contacted, police said.

A conservation officer advised that residents keep trash can lids on securely, do not feed the bear, do not attempt to take pictures. keep pets on a leash, keep a safe distance and notify police.
