Black Knight Bowbenders holding 22nd Bigfoot Open

The Black Knight Bowbenders (BKB) archery range in Jackson Township will become Sherwood Forest this weekend.

On July 16-17, the club is presenting its 22nd Bigfoot Open. Archers will come to the Jackson range on Perrineville Road to test their skills against some of the top archers in the state for prize money.

Anyone with a bow (excluding crossbows) can take part in the competition. The top prize is that of Top Gun that is decided July 16. The Top Gun contest pits the top dot archers against the best 3D archers. In the competition, dot archers shoot field/hunter targets and the 3D archers shoot 3D targets. The six highest scoring dot shooters will then face off against the top six 3D shooters starting at 2:30 p.m.

Archers must say that they want to be in the Top Gun competition when they register. Registration will be held up to 9 a.m.

In the Top Gun contest, the  archers will shoot both field and 3D targets with the combined scores from the two targets determining the winner.

The other Bigfoot highlights are July 17. It starts with the two-man Team 3D Money Shoot at 9 a.m., followed at 11:30 a.m. by the Last Man Standing. Closing the competition at 2 p.m. is the Bigfoot Skins Game.

Archers will aim at field targets and dot targets from a variety of distances during the competition.

Gene Grodzki, a member of BKB, said that part of the popularity with archery, which is an Olympic sport, is that “there is an unexplained fascination with shooting an arrow cleanly and silently at its mark.”

Grodzki compared archery to golf and the quest for the perfect shot. Just as golfers try to hit a clean shot with a perfect swing, archers look to hit the bull’s-eye on the target.

“An archer gets the same electric feeling in the split second a perfect arrow leaves his bow,” he said. “A perfect feeling shot can be rare for a novice.

“When it happens, for a magical moment the mind, body and equipment are all in harmony, and the result is the perfect shot. The arrow slams into the bull’s-eye. This was not a lucky shot. For a moment, everything makes sense, and the memory of all the terrible shots is gone.”

Archers will certainly be pursuing the perfect shot this weekend as they look to win the title Top Gun and other championships.

Along with the archery competition, there will be an Archery/Sporting Goods Swap Meet. Archers can turn in old bows, arrows, releases and other kinds of sporting goods for cash or swap them for other things.
