Quaker State is back for a second year in the northern New Jersey/New York area and has selected 10 high schools as candidates for the “Best in Class Challenge,” an automotive education program that supports high school auto shop classes across the country in their efforts to restore and customize pre-owned cars into rides that represent their schools.
Candidates include: Edison High School in Edison; Kearny High School in Kearny; Alfred E. Smith Career and Technical Education High School in Bronx, New York; Hunterdon County Polytech in Flemington; Essex County Vocational Technical School in West Caldwell; Bergen County Technical High School in Paramus; Bergen County Technical High School in Teterboro; Ocean County Vocational Technical School in Brick; Gerald R. Claps Career and Technical Center in Levittown, New York; and West Milford Township High School in West Milford.
Last year, Kearny High School earned fifth place, taking home prizes and scholarship money for the school. Additionally, the school secured extensive news coverage for its team and automotive program.
In September, the www.QuakerState.com voting page will go live. Each school is tasked with securing as many votes as possible to become a finalist. One school from the current candidate list will move on to participate in a six-week competition against top schools from four other metropolitan areas — Orlando, Florida; Atlanta, Georgia; Charlotte, North Carolina; and Chicago, Illinois.
