ALLENTOWN – Flappers, the Jazz Age and an historic property in Allentown will all serve as the backdrop for a fundraiser to be hosted by the Allentown Village Initiative.
On Aug. 13, the nonprofit Allentown Village Initiative will host a fundraiser at the Tudor Stone House, 143 S. Main St. Martha Ploshay, who chairs the organization, said the residence is a perfect venue for an evening of American opulence.
“The Tudor Stone House was built in 1930 … and we decided to go with a 1920s and 1930s theme to match,” Ploshay said.
Attendees will be encouraged to dress in period clothing from the 1920s and 1930s, including “flapper” styles for women and suits for men.
From 5-8 p.m., hors d’oeurves provided by Allentown restaurants and select sangrias will be served while a jazz band plays music of the era on the patio. Ploshay said there will be an open air photo booth, a silent auction, floral displays and antique vehicles. Films from the era will be shown.
The Allentown Village Initiative is an associate program of the Main Street New Jersey program which supports business operators and community leaders as they work to restore historic municipalities.
Ploshay said the organization’s directors hope to raise $5,000 through ticket sales and silent auctions. Funds raised by the Allentown Village Initiative have been used for several projects in town, including the restoration of historic buildings and the restoration of the Colonial Episcopal Cemetery.
“This is an historic community and we want to bring more people to our downtown so they can shop and see exactly what Allentown has to offer,” Ploshay said. “History is very important in Allentown, where we are a kind of endangered community as a village, so we would like to build it up so people can enjoy our town.”
