Prior to the New York Liberty taking the hardwood on July 17 to play the Connecticut Sun in a women’s professional basketball game, Hillsborough’s Flair Dance Academy’s competitive hip-hop team of dancers ranging from 9 to 16 years old will be performing.
“For our award-winning competitive hip hop team to continue gaining experience and exposure in a setting such as Madison Square Garden is a tremendous opportunity,” said Amanda Grace, owner and artistic director of Flair Dance Academy.
Ms. Grace is no stranger to the Madison Square Garden or what it takes to perform at peak level there. She is a former New York Knicks City Dancer and also New York Titans lacrosse dancer.
“ As a former NY Knicks City Dancer myself, this is a dream for me to see my dancers on the same platform,” she said. “Having this type of professional experience lends itself to positioning our team to a higher level. We will provide an innovative routine with high-energy choreography for our performance on the court prior to the Liberty’s game,” she said.
Flair’s competitive hip hop team has won platinum and first place in category, first place overall, extreme energy awards and choreography awards at regional competitions this season. The team just returned home from nationals in Cape May, where it placed second in its category with a platinum score in the highest skill division for its particular routine.
They were one of the top five highest-scoring routines in each category invited to perform. Flair’s team placed second overall for the entire competition and was awarded the “Hip Hop Divas” title.
Flair Dance Academy enters its fifth year in Hillsborough and recently moved to a state-of-the-art 5,000-square-foot facility at 2 Ilene Court, near the Hillsborough Cinemas.
