Shane Stone of East Brunswick, a student at Wake Forest School of Medicine, Winston-Salem, N.C., recently was named to the 2016-17 Class of North Carolina Albert Schweitzer Fellows. Stone is one of 30 graduate students who will spend the next year learning to address the social factors that impact health and developing lifelong leadership skills. Schweitzer Fellows develop and implement service projects that address the root causes of health disparities in under-resourced communities, while also fulfilling their academic responsibilities. Each project is implemented in collaboration with a community-based health and/or social-service organization. For his project, Stone is developing a support outreach to foster children affected by adult substance/alcohol abuse. His community site is The Downtown Health Plaza, an outpatient clinic of North Carolina Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem.
